About Gurjaradesa

Gurjaradesa, (lit. 'Gurjara country', or Gurjaratra) is a historical region in India comprising southern Rajasthan and northern Gujarat during the period of 6th–12th century CE. The name is derived from the abundant grasslands (Gau + char) of this region, which also makes it home to famous dairies like the Dudhsagar Dairy and the Banas Dairy.

The very name “Gujarat” is derived from Gurjaratra, a Prakrit form of Gurjara land — signifying how the ancient identity continues in modern geography.

Why Gurjaradesha Matters

  • Cultural crossroads: Gurjaradesha stood between Sindh, Lata (southern Gujarat), and Malwa. It was frequently mentioned in ancient texts and foreign accounts, such as by the Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang (Hiuen Tsang) who noted the city of Bhinmal in Gurjara country.

  • Centers of learning: Bhinmal was famed as a hub of knowledge, home to scholars such as Brahmagupta, whose mathematical works influenced both India and distant lands.

  • Continuity and change: Over centuries, the term Gurjaradesha was used in inscriptions and texts, evolving into names like Gurjaratra and eventually Gujarat.

  • Architectural and artistic heritage: The region fostered the Maru-Gurjara style of temple architecture and conservative traditions in sculpture, ornamentation, and inscriptional art.
